International Women’s Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. International Women’s Day (IWD) has occurred for well over a century, with the first IWD gathering in 1911, supported by over 1 million people in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland.

Baker McKenzie’s Toronto office celebrated this year’s International Women’s Day’s by joining the global ‘Balance for Better’ campaign.

Helle Bank Jørgensen, President Emeritus & Senior Advisor at the UN Global Compact Network Canada  also joined the office to share her insights on the opportunity and the necessity of gender balance in business and society.

“We need to make every day Women’s Day” said Helle.  “I hope that you all will go home and celebrate International Women’s Day, and keep the conversation going. This society is not going to survive if half of us are not really part of the discussion. I bet all of you have idea’s, those idea’s are what can become reality so please speak up.”

Managing Partner Kevin Coon echoed Helle’s comments. “Right now is an important time in history as globally, we focus on diversity and our efforts to forge a gender-balanced world. International Women’s Day is a poignant opportunity to stop and reflect on the work we have committed to do to advance gender balance here at Baker McKenzie.”
