How can Baker McKenzie continue to provide the best solutions for our clients in an increasingly uncertain and ever-changing market?
What initiatives will propel clients forward as leaders in their fields?
How can experts with diverse professional and educational backgrounds work together to solve complex challenges?
Our answer: the Whitespace Legal Collab.
On June 6, Baker McKenzie’s Toronto office will launch the Whitespace Legal Collab, the world’s first innovation lab at a global law firm devoted to multidisciplinary collaboration.
Whitespace Collab will bring together lawyers, clients, data specialists, designers, students and other specialists across a diverse spectrum of age, experience and expertise to address changing client needs, new industry dynamics and the broader role of digitization across the economy.
The Firm’s Global Chair, Paul Rawlinson, will be present at the launch and we’ll also welcome author, information designer and data artist, Giorgia Lupi as a keynote speaker.

The lab itself is the brainchild of Toronto Partner Theo Ling, creator of our award-winning iG360 platform, head of the Firm’s Canadian Information Technology/Communications Practice Group and senior member of the Global IT/C Practice Group. Sanjay Khanna, renowned Futurist and Open Innovation Consultant, is the Collab’s Director.

Initial Collab partnerships include IBM Canada, SAS, University of Waterloo, Schulich School of Business, University of Toronto and Global Compact Network Canada.
“Reinvention is restless. To harness game-changing technologies including artificial intelligence, blockchain and quantum computing, innovators need to champion methods from experience-led design to multidisciplinary problem-solving,” said Pavel Abdur-Rahman, Associate Partner at IBM Canada. “Partnering with Baker McKenzie’s Whitespace Collab, IBM is pleased to be a collaboration-minded change agent that discovers new urban data potential at the intersections of business, law, technology and civic space.”
Sanjay and Managing Partner Kevin Coon will also speak at the launch, addressing the significance of the Toronto market being chosen for the project and what it means for the Firm and our clients moving forward, both locally and globally.
“The Collab is one example of how we are working to create environments across all of our offices around the world that allow for fresh ideas, and where we can challenge and improve established ways of doing work,” Kevin said.
